President Trump’s first week has been as tumultuous as some anticipated. After the last-minute changes to the inauguration plans, forced by the cold weather, President Trump embarked on a frenzy of executive orders, ranging from pulling out of the Paris Climate Deal, to declaring an emergency on America’s southern border and pardoning those convicted of offences related to January 6.In the last 24 hours, Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Colombia after it refused to accept plane loads of deported migrants, then abruptly lifted the tax after Colombia appeared to back down.It gives a sense of how the 47th president intends to use protectionism to get his way and highlights his tough, transactional negotiating style. The clock is still ticking down to similar tariffs on Mexico and Canada which would be imposed on February 1, unless a compromise is hammered out on illegal migrants and the flow of the drug fentanyl.
